Hot Pot baby and Good Friends

Gold Coast Seafood Restaurant

 金灣漁港火鍋

Gypsy Girl 2012
Hong Kong has lots of Hot Pot Restaurants,  but if you want something more local and cheap beer this is the place you need to go.  We had nine people and we each paid HK$120.00  each, but we ate a lot food accompanied with many beers.

I am heading out with family and friends to a new food place. New for me, but not new to Hong Kong.

Why am I going here? This place has been featured on the T.V., in many, many Blogs and  in travel articles. I have been trying to get here for a while now, but something always gets in my way…usually my life.

Year of the Rabbit.

February 3, 2011 is the first day of the Chinese new year.

THE RABBIT PERSONALITY

http://www.theholidayspot.com/chinese_new_year/more_zodiacs/rabbit.htm
A person born in the year of the Rabbit possesses one of the most fortunate of the twelve animal signs. The Rabbit, or Hare as he is referred to in Chinese mythology, is the emblem of longevity and is said to derive his essence from the Moon.

Year of the Rabbit - 1915, 1927, 1939, 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011, 2023, 2036, 2047

"The rabbit has represented hope of the Chinese people for a long time. It is tender and lovely. The moon goddess Chang'e in Chinese legend had a rabbit as her pet, which stimulated the thought that only the rabbit was amiable enough to match her noble beauty. The Chinese character 'Tu' (rabbit) is part of 'Yi' (escape or leisure) indicating speed and distance. The Han people have a custom that a pregnant woman is not allowed to eat rabbit meat for fear that the child will be born with a harelip. The newborn is given paintings of children and rabbits representing that the child will have a peaceful and happy life."http://www.travelchinaguide.com/intro/social_customs/zodiac/

No more Coco Thai!

We rode pass the Deep water bay only to find one of our favorite places to eat Coco thai is GONE! Our friend just ate there a few days ago. How sad, that is Hong Kong for you things build up and close in a blink of an eye. I loved Coco thai is was set on the beach and I loved the view when the sun was going down. Now I need to find another place on the beach to eat and drink.

Burger King in Hong Kong

While we were exploring Wan Chai and we stumble upon .... A Freaking Burger King. No we didn't eat there... we were in the mood for Japanese food. But I will travel back there when I am missing America.

Durian the King of Asian fruits

DURIAN
"It smelled like you'd buried somebody holdinga big wheel of Stilton in his arms, then dug him up a few weeks later." ~Anthony Bourdain (1956 --) http://www.foodreference.com/html/qdurian.html

My take on Durian fruit...It smells like soured milk crossed with stinky Frito feet and  moldy oranges mashed together to make a custard paste. Have I tried it yet? NO, I hate to admit it, but I can't get pass the smell. I am not jumping up and down to try it, but since we are going on our sixth year in Asia... We should try it...we try so many other things (like goat balls) without over thinking it.

It is the SMELL! It is really hard to get passed. Anyway, we found Durian ice Cream in the market and decided we should try this. Who doesn't like ice cream? How bad could it taste? The smell should be toned down...that would make it easier for my nose.

I have to make this disclaimer, we are not a picky eaters, and we at least try everything once. The Durian fruit has been one of a few things that we haven't been able get passed the smell.
OK...here I go....
It has the appearance of play doh, the consistency of harden soft serve ice cream  and it smells like something all its own. Better yet it isn't stinky. The taste is smooth, sweet and at the back of my tongue I can taste sour, but I can't think of anything to compare it too. Not too helpful.

Our daughter does not like it, she spit it out. My husband and I finished ours, but I don't think I will eat any more.  The aftertaste is not the best...very sour. When I burped it was smell of a sour stomach.

We tried it! We are one step closer to trying the actual fruit.
If you want to know more about durian- check out Wikipedia- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Durian - I am not a big supporter of Wikipedia, but they did a good job on the information.

"Why not go out on a limb? Isn't that where the fruit is?" ~Frank Scullyhttp://www.quotegarden.com/risk.html

How to get to Gateway store

Take the MTR and get off at the Sheung Wan station.
I Seem to always board the MTR at Admiralty station, Sheung Wan is on line 2. Sheung Wan is the last stop on the line. When exit the subway look for the "E" exit. The Exit at "E2" Wing lol st 6-26
Gatewaystore is on your left- Yellow door- it is the back entry of the store. Walk down the stairs and you will see the register.

If you want to go to Wing on take a right instead of a left when you exit "e2". Walk around the corner and look up you will see the sign for Wing on in bold yellow letters on the building. The only thing you will need to do is cross the street and enter the front door.

Here is a photo of Wing on-

Aberdeen Wetmarket... not the Fish market

My friend was visiting from Japan and I decided a visit to the Aberdeen wet market would be a great introduction to Hong Kong Culture in Grocery shopping.

I love going to the Wet markets, but I have come to learn that many Expats don’t shop at wet markets for their fruit, veggies, seafood and some meats. I have heard various reasons why people don’t shop at the wet markets… from personal experience I have never experience any problems. The only problem I ran into was being yelled at for taking photos. I didn’t take in personal it is their business and if they don’t want you to take photos it is their right. Here are some photos and by the way excuse the way they look…I was yelled at for taking photos-LOL At the end of the Photo I posted some information about the Aberdeen market.
Not so good photo of the seafood section
This is my bad photo of the seafood section.
This is the flower section. I have found they have a great selection and great pricing.  I haven't done it, but I have had friends who did have plants delivered from them (in a timely manner)
The market is sectioned by fruit, veggies then seafood in the back. The meat is one floor up
 One of two entrance/exit
 the other entrance/exit

Aberdeen Market in Southern District has moved up one place in ranking to become the wet market with the highest food prices. (January 19, 2010) http://www.consumer.org.hk/website/ws_en/news/pricewatch/monthlywetmktindex/2010011901.html

Stanley at night

Stanley is not a party place. It is a place to relax, but to be honest I expected more energy. Here are some photos at night. I have only lived here a few month, so maybe it will liven up after it warms up more. The photos were taken at 7 pm.

Lamms island

No Lammas here- I searched. We will be going back. It was a great place for a day trip. I didn't find out why it is called Lamma island and I need to know. We played on the beach had a couple of drinks a piece of a cheese cake, and the best garlic bread at a place called Concerto Inn (info at the bottom of the page).
On the way to the Lamma island I saw this huge cargo ship. It made me feel really small and I had to share it.

The beach was called, I think, Hung Shing Yeh Beach.

When we left the ferry we walked upon all these bike and cafe like places. I loved it!! next time I want to eat at one if these places.

Kowloon Sling, I think it was supposed to be like the Singapore sling. I didn't like it. I don't know how to explain it. It wasn't delicious, it was ok. It tasted like fermented citrus fruit, sugar and lots of rum. The after taste was similar to spoiled orange juice with a kick of sweetness. I only had one. I needed a beer to get rid of the taste. Then we had a nice slice of cappuccino cheesecake.
We take our daughter everywhere with us. She has a camera too here is one of her photos
